The Kargil branch of the National Conference has collectively resigned, claiming that the party’s leadership is pressuring them to endorse the Congress candidate for Ladakh. They argue that for the benefit of Ladakh, the Ladakh Democratic Alliance has chosen to nominate Mohammad Haneefa Jan as an independent candidate. They state that this decision is supported by various political and religious institutions across party lines.
The Kargil unit asserts that the party’s insistence on supporting the Congress candidate goes against the interests of the people of Ladakh. Feeling compelled to act in the region’s best interest, they have submitted mass resignations from all party positions, expressing their dissatisfaction with the party’s stance.
Qamar Ali Akhoon, the Additional General Secretary of NC Kargil Unit, reiterated this position, emphasizing that they find it unacceptable to support the Congress candidate, as directed by the party leadership.
The upcoming elections in Ladakh are scheduled for May 20, with the results to be announced on June 4. In the previous 2019 elections, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the BJP won in Ladakh. This time, the BJP has nominated Tashi Gyalson as their candidate, replacing Namgyal.
